Abstract

Educational teaching is one of the fundamental concepts of pedagogical theory. From the perspective of its pedagogical purpose, teaching is an educational construct and therefore does not represent a new culture of instruction. The aim of this paper was to explore the specific features of educational teaching in one medresa (Islamic secondary school) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Research interviews were conducted with teachers (N = 10) and fourth-grade students (N = 20) of this secondary school. The results showed that self-discipline, instruction, and pedagogical guidance — identified as the core characteristics of educational teaching—are deeply embedded in the educational system of the medresa. Contemporary teaching, which is strongly influenced by the standardization of education, must necessarily be redefined in a humanistic manner so that it may regain its meaning and purpose.
